LEWISTON – Police say speeding on an icy road was the likely cause of a Friday evening crash on Main Street that sent three men to the hospital.

An off-duty firefighter from Greene was credited with providing first aid to the victims of the wreck before police and emergency crews responded.

Two men were injured when the pickup truck they were riding in skidded into a box truck traveling in the opposite direction about 7 p.m.

Investigators said Ryan Willey, 25, of Augusta, was driving north on Main Street when he lost control of his Dodge pickup near Marden’s.

The truck slid into the oncoming lane and collided with the a box truck driven by Marcel LeClair, 57, of Lewiston.

Witnesses told police Willey was driving fast on a street that was still covered with ice and snow from a storm earlier in the day.

Fire crews ripped the roof from the Dodge to free Willey’s leg that was pinned, police said. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with a hip injury and possible broken bones.

A passenger in Willey’s truck, 27-year-old Jason Bonenfant, also from the Augusta area, was examined for pain.

LeClair was also taken to CMMC where he was examined for injuries to his hip and shoulder. Leclair and Willey were both being evaluated late Friday night.

Police said off-duty Greene firefighter Joey Brown saw the crash as he was driving through the area.

“He witnessed it, stopped and was rendering first aid when the rest of us arrived,” said Lewiston police Sgt. David St. Pierre.

The crash forced police to close a section of Main Street, and motorists were rerouted onto Mollison Way and other side roads.

The collision remained under investigation Friday night.
