In case people missed it, this is important. Former Gov. Angus King was right on in remarks made Nov. 16 at a regional government meeting in Auburn. He stated that Maine taxpayers want more services, and they want lower taxes. It’s an entitlement mentality that is common. He also stated: “We can’t go around and promise everything. The problem is, for politicians, there’s no reward for telling the truth.”
Good for him. I always did like him, and I have never heard of a present or former politician making a statement like that. We all know it, but nobody talks about it. Let me repeat that quote, in case it didn’t come through. King said, “The problem is, for politicians, there is no reward for telling the truth.”
Having town governments and local schools share resources and reduce expenses is going to be an uphill battle.
Auburn taxpayers should watch for and learn more of what they can do. They should watch for the Taxpayer Bill of Rights referendum vote, coming in November 2006. That will be a starting point for citizens to control their taxes.
