LEWISTON – Two teenagers were injured and a Monmouth man was arrested following a two-vehicle, head-on crash shortly before 8 Sunday night.

The wreck happened near the Harvey-Davidson dealership on Main Street.

Police Lt. Thomas Avery said firefighters had to extract the teenage girls from the 1995 Mazda Protg one was driving. Both were taken to Central Maine Medical Center by ambulance.

Avery said their injuries weren’t life-threatening. He said the driver was a 16-year-old girl; he wasn’t sure about her passenger Sunday night.

Police were still gathering information for their investigation, Avery noted, and said he couldn’t provide names or addresses Sunday night.

Robert Beesley, 44, of Monmouth, the driver of a 1994 Dodge Caravan, was arrested by police after the crash and charged with operating under the influence.

Beesley was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail for booking.

Avery said Beesley’s van crossed the center line of Main Street as Beesley was headed out of the city. The vehicles slammed together nose-to-nose.

“Damage to both vehicles was extensive,” Avery said. He estimated that they were unrepairable.
