LEWISTON – Christina White of Greene is the winner of a $25 gift certificate as a past participant in Healthy Androscoggin’s Quit and Win Program. Her name was entered into a drawing for filling out a survey.

White said, “Quit and Win is a fabulous program.” She said she had tried to quit smoking many times in the past, and her most successful attempt was when she entered the Quit and Win program.

White said, “The chance to win the prize money was a great incentive. I quit for three months and if I hadn’t made it that long, I don’t think I would be motivated to try quitting again.” White said she is determined to quit for good in Quit and Win 2006.

Healthy Androscoggin is kicking off its seventh annual Quit and Win program for the seventh year.

The free program is available to residents of Androscoggin County, including youth, who want to live a life free from tobacco.

Those interested must register by Jan. 9 and pick a quit date before Jan. 16. Participants must stay free from tobacco for the five weeks of the program in order to be eligible for prizes.

Those who stay tobacco-free from Jan. 16 to Feb. 20 will be entered in a drawing to win $100, $250, and $500 cash. Youth who stay quit are entered into a drawing to win movie theater tickets, hockey tickets, lift tickets and gift certificates to local restaurants. Door prizes are also donated by area businesses.

To sign up, visit the Web at www.healthyandroscoggin.org or call 795-5990.

Participants will receive mailings throughout the program with resources, support and motivation. Everyone must sign up with a helper, and the helper will also receive information on how to support their friend or relative in quitting tobacco.

In addition, Healthy Androscoggin announces that a Tobacco Support Group will be offered in conjunction with Quit and Win. Anyone who has quit or is trying to quit tobacco is welcome to attend the group meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays at Central Maine Medical Center Conference Room D, lower level of the 12 High St. building. The group is free and open to the public.

Healthy Androscoggin is a community coalition funded in part by the Healthy Maine Partnership, Maine Center for Disease Control. For more information about this and other health related events/resources, call 795-5990 or visit www.healthyandroscoggin.org.
