STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) – A routine traffic stop Tuesday morning led to the seizure of $10 million in cocaine and the arrest of a limousine driver and his passenger.
Livery driver Luis Vavanco, 39, of Jersey City, N.J., and Nicolas Becema Asensio 38, of Huron, Calif., face charges of possessing cocaine with intent to sell.
The Lincoln Town Car Vavanco was driving was pulled over on Jefferson Street at about 6:40 a.m. after running a red light, police said.
While being questioned, Vavanco and Asensio gave officers conflicting and evasive statements, but agreed to a search of the car, police said. The officers found three duffel bags in the trunk filled with 55 one-kilogram bricks of cocaine, police said. Authorities called it one of the largest cocaine seizures in state history.
“Not too many people have this amount of drugs,” said police Capt. Richard Conklin. “How many lives would this destroy?”
Vavanco told police the duffel bags belonged to Asensio, and Asensio denied they were his, police said.
“This appears to be a major person who would be selling this,” said police Lt. John Fontneau. “They were in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency was helping in the ongoing investigation.
“A 55-kilo seizure is huge,” said Anthony Pettigrew, DEA spokesman. “Any time you can get that amount of cocaine off the street it is significant. It’s probably a pretty significant organization.”
