BARRE, Vt. (AP) – Students returned to school Tuesday, just hours after teachers and the school board settled their contract dispute and reached a tentative accord.

Teachers walked off their jobs after talks broke down over health care benefits on Dec. 9.

No additional negotiations took place until Monday and they stretched for nine hours into the early morning Tuesday, when a deal finally was reached.

The details of the agreement will ere not released until the school board and the teachers vote on it. Teachers were scheduled to vote Wednesday.

“I feel that we’re satisfied with the outcome of the process,” Ed Stout, president of the Barre Education Association, said as he prepared to return to work at Spaulding High School. “Both sides negotiated and compromised last night and we got an agreement that is a fair agreement.”

The strike was focused primarily on how much teachers have to pay for their health insurance coverage.
