Fishing seminar

FAIRFIELD – Flyfishingin maine.com, in conjunction with Kennebec River Outfitters, is holding open registration for the Jan. 14 entomology seminar to be put on by entomologist Tom Ames at Lawrence Junior High School.

Ames is a commercial photographer whose studio is located in an old woolen mill in Lebanon, N.H. In addition to his book, “Hatch Guide to New England Streams,” Ames is a contributor to Fly Fishing and Tying Journal.

The cost is $35 and proceeds from the event will benefit Flyfishinginmaine.com and the fly fishing club at Lawrence High School. Register in advance by calling Kennebec River Outfitters at 474-2500.

Outdoor courses

UNITY – Unity College will offer two outdoor oriented courses to the public.

Wilderness First Responder will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, Jan. 2 to 12. The 10-day profession-focused course in emergency medical care addresses the issues of long-term patient care, back-country rescue techniques and survival skills. Participants will be certified in wilderness first responder and CPR.

The cost is $400; no college credit will be awarded.

A Maine Guide Preparation Course will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 30 through April 24. The course prepares students to enter the state’s testing process for licensing Maine guides. The cost is $425; no college credit will be awarded.

Poetry conclave

FRANCONIA, N.H. – The Frost Place is accepting applications for the Conference on Poetry and Teaching being held June 26 to 30. The conference will bring middle and high school teachers and poets together to address how poetry can be most effectively taught.

Conference Director Baron Wormser, poet laureate of Maine and author of six books of poetry, will be joined by nationally recognized poets Marie Harris, Jack Wiler, Carolyn Wright, Catherine Doty and Eloise Bruce.

Applicants are asked to write a brief letter describing their teaching position, background and interest in teaching and poetry. Tuition is $350 ($450 for out-of-state residents). Three graduate credits are available through the University System of New Hampshire.
