I am tired of hearing that the petition to change the way Mexico voters vote from a show of hands to a secret ballot is not a legal petition.

Four hundred people have made their intent to support this change clear, asking only that it be allowed to be put to a vote by the citizens of Mexico at the next town election.

Town officials are fighting it. What are they afraid of?

It has been shown by other towns that the secret ballot increases participation. There are no more town meetings that are controlled by 25 or 30 people with special interests.

It has been said by the town manager and three selectman that the people who signed this petition did not know what they were signing. Mexico taxpayers and voters are not stupid. They knew just what they were doing and expressed this to me many times during the day when I was gathering the names for this petition on voting day in November.

Anyone could understand it.

Voters should call their selectmen and ask, “What’s the problem? What’s wrong with more people getting to vote?”
