BOOTHBAY HARBOR – Junior forward Mike Holmquist drained 21 points in a see-saw battle as Dirigo survived a 64-62 overtime victory over Boothbay in MVC boys’ basketball action Thursday.
The Seahawks (3-1) had the ball for the final 17 seconds of regulation, but failed to secure the win as the shot was blocked.
Boothbay’s sophomore center Kris Noonan shared a game-high 21 points, while junior forward Roy Arsenault tallied 17 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.The 6-foot-4 freshman center, Thomas Knight, contributed 18 points for the Cougars (5-0). Dirigo tossed 7-of-10 from the free throw line in the overtime frame to notch the victory.
Mtn. Valley 76, Monmouth 39
MONMOUTH – Forward Andy Shorey scored 21 points in a balanced attack as Mtn. Valley buckled Monmouth 76-39 in MVC boys’ basketball action Thursday.
The Falcons (4-0) controlled the game by forcing turnovers, and executing an efficient offense. Guards D.J. Gerrish and Marcus Palmer scored five field goals apiece, with Palmer hitting one from beyond the arc.
Junior guard Nate Armstrong led the Mustangs with 13 points, including three treys in the losing effort.
Maranacook 52, Waterville 46
READFIELD – Sophomore guard Ryan Martin scored a game-high 24 points as Maranacook edged Waterville 52-46 in overtime in KVAC boys’ basketball action Thursday.
The Purple Panthers (1-3) took a 16-9 first quarter lead, and both teams floundered in the second quarter with only three points apiece. Senior center Finley Allen led Waterville with 22 points. The Black Bears (5-0) picked away at Waterville’s seven point first half lead until tying the contest at the end of regulation.
Georges Valley 53, Madison 45
THOMASTON – Nate Frisbee hit some key shots down the stretch to lead Georges Valley to a 53-45 victory over Madison.
Madison (2-3) led 39-25 after three periods, but the Buccaneers (3-2) outscored the Bulldogs 18-6 in the final quarter to pull away.Cote Baughman led the Bucs with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Frisbee fionished with 13 points and Todd Cousins had 10 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Tom Steuber led Madison with 19 points.
Lisbon 66, Jay 45
JAY – Levi Ervin scored a game-high 22 points to power Lisbon to a 66-45 win over Jay in MVC boys’ basketball action Thursday.
Ervin recorded 16 points in the first half as the Greyhounds jumped out to a 42-14 lead at the break. Brendan McGivney provided another 15 points for Lisbon in the winning effort.
Jamison Turner led the Tigers with 14 points. Jake Brown and Brad Loon each had 10 points for Jay.
Livermore Falls 54, Hall-Dale 53
HALLOWELL – Center, Mike Durrell collected 25 points and sank the game-winning basket as Livermore Falls squeaked by Hall-Dale 54-53 in overtime in MVC boys’ basketball action Thursday.
Senior forward Eric Gagne paced the Bulldogs (1-3) with 19 points, junior center Justin Poland tallied 16 points and senior guard Jay Skillings added 10 points in the hard luck loss.
NYA 57, St. Dom’s 51
AUBURN – Brian Chin drained 23 points to pace North Yarmouth Academy to a 57-51 victory over St. Dom’s in local basketball action Thursday. Nate Isaccson chipped in for NYA (4-1) with 16 points in a virtual two-man show.
Justin Richardson led the Saints (1-2) with a 19-point performance, while Billy Colasante added nine. Andrew Allen also contributed with five points and 14 rebounds.
Telstar 58, Mt. Abram 49
BETHEL – Sean Cadigan poured 24 points Thursday to lead Telstar to a 58-49 victory over Mt. Abram in more boy’s basketball action.
Ryan Kimball chipped in for the Rebels (2-3) with 12 points and 10 rebounds in a well-balanced attack. Aaron Adams led the Roadrunners (2-3) with 17 points, while Jordan Norton tallied 14. Mt. Abram held a 30-26 advantage at the half and easily hung on to win.
Rangeley 47, Buckfield 40
BUCKFIELD – David Jensen scored a game-high 19 points to propel Rangeley to a 47-40 victory over Buckfield.
Justin Gallant chipped in for the Lakers (2-1) with 17 points in the convincing win.
John Condon and Matt Lowell led the Bucks (0-3) with seven points each.
Rangeley jumped out to a 15-9 advantage in the first quarter and was never seriously challenged.
Greely 51, Gray-New Gloucester 47
GRAY – Kevin Letiecq netted 18 points Thursday evening to lead Greely to a narrow 51-47 victory over Gray-New Gloucester in more local boy’s hoops action.
Matt McDonough chipped in for the Rangers (4-2) with 15 points, the only other player to reach double digits.
Chris Bennett led the Patriots (2-4) with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Matt Robertson contributed with 12.
Freeport 52, Poland 36
POLAND – Danny Nehler led a trio of players in double digits with 13 as Freeport rolled past Poland 52-36 Thursday evening. Alex Standen and Elliott Townsend chipped in for Freeport (5-1) with 12 points each in a well-balanced offensive attack.
Joe Douglass led the Knights (2-4) with seven points, while Keegan Fennessy tallied six. Freeport held a commanding 34-23 advantage after the first half of play and cruised home to an easy victory.
Girls’ Basketball
St. Dom’s 47, NYA 34
AUBURN – Mary Lewis netted 12 points to pace St. Dom’s to a 47-34 victory over North Yarmouth Academy in girl’s basketball action Thursday.
Malley O’Shea and Abby Gilbert chipped in for the Saints (2-1) with eight points each. Erin Lachance led NYA (0-5) with a 12-point performance, while Katie Knight added seven.
Poland 50, Freeport 39
FREEPORT – Sophomore guard Danielle Belanger came off the bench to drain 13 points and lead Poland to a 50-39 win over Freeport in WMC girls’ basketball action Thursday.
Junior forward Kathryn Hall recorded a double-double with 12 points and 21 rebounds for the Knights (2-4).
Poland led 20-19 at halftime, then made their move in the third quarter by getting hot from the perimeter.
The Knights connected on five of their six 3-point field goal attempts to take a 37-28 lead into the final period.
