Despite Lewiston-Auburn’s hills and gullies, there are relatively few public places for children to go sledding. There are a few gems, though. The best of the bunch appears to be on Albert’s Hill on Route 196 in Lisbon.

“It’s the biggest and the safest,” said Marcey Seger of Lisbon, who recently took her two children, Makenzey and Austin Bedford, ages 2 and 7. “There’s no road and no river to worry about,” Seger said.

Where to sled:

• Lisbon’s Albert’s Hill is on Route 196, across from the town office and two doors down from the post office. Some off-street parking is available.

• Pettengill Park in Auburn is a popular site for children in nearby neighborhoods. The slopes, located near the Ingersoll Arena, are gentle and protected from street traffic.

• Near Pettengill Park, the property around the city-owned basketball courts at the intersection of Goff and Hampshire streets, also offers sliding protected from nearby traffic.

• In Lewiston, children in the Longley School neighborhood use an empty lot at the corner of Bates and Birch streets. The B-Street Community Center is across the street.
