LEWISTON – Sheldon F. “Shed” Jordan, 84, of Pauline Street, Sabattus, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, at St. Mary’s Hospital, after emergency surgery for a brain hemorrhage.
He was born April 1, 1921, in West Bethel, the son of Earle Howard Jordan Sr. and Carrie Emma (Pulsifer) Jordan.
He was a retired U.S. Air Force chief master sergeant (E-9) and a graduate of the University of Maine at Machias.
He married his first wife, Ruth Alvena (Webster) Jordan, on Nov. 11, 1945. After she died, he married Eileen (Bubier) Dupuis Jordan on Aug. 27, 1983.
He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and later in the U.S. Air Force.
His medals and awards include the Good Conduct Medal with five Bronze Loops, American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Korean Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal with four Battle Stars, Commendation Ribbon, Philippines Liberation Ribbon, and the U.S. Service Medal.
His military units included the 103 Infantry Regiment, 43rd Division, and he served in the Pacific Theater as a master sergeant during World War II. In the U.S. Air Force, he served with the 527th AC&W in Japan, and he served in Libya as well. He was also stationed at Otis AFB in Massachusetts and Ent AFB in Colorado. He retired from the Air Force in 1962.
He then taught computer programming in the Plus-Gray School of Business in Portland. He later worked as a computer programmer for the U.S. Navy in Virginia Beach, Va. After graduating from college in 1972, he was a junior high school teacher in Chelsea.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 150 in Mechanic Falls and a lifetime member of the VFW.
Throughout his life, Sheldon loved to read and learn, particularly in the areas of history and biography. He enjoyed a good debate, especially a political one. His other interests included fly fishing, gardening and bird-watching. He was a man of great integrity and was loved and respected by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen of Sabattus; a son, David Jordan and his wife, Tracy, of Cornish; a daughter, Gail Harris and her husband Charles, of Mesa, Ariz.; two stepsons, Jeffrey Dupuis of Topsham and Richard Dupuis of Lewiston; four grandsons, Cody Jordan, Edward Harris, Fergus Harris and Stuart Harris; three great-granddaughters, Sabrina, Lauren and Kaida Harris; three step-granddaughters, Casey, Christie and Summer Dupuis; a step-grandson, Mason Dupuis; two brothers, the Rev. Lawrence Jordan of Poland and Earle Jordan Jr. of Florida; and three sisters, Janice Clark of Auburn, Marlene Crawford of Mechanic Falls, and June Caldwell of San Francisco.
He was predeceased by seven brothers, Richard, Almon, Melville, Robert, Norman, Carl and Donald; and four sisters, Ruth Jordan, Doris Smith, Marion Abbot and Gloria Jordan.
The family is deeply grateful for the help and support provided by family and friends. Eileen would like to especially thank the staff at St. Mary’s Hospital for all their compassionate and very professional help at a difficult time.
