WATERVILLE (AP) – Dorothy “Bibby” Alfond, wife of Dexter Shoe Co. founder and philanthropist Harold Alfond, died Saturday. She was 89.
Friends and relatives described her as a generous woman who supported her husband’s charitable work as well as contributing to causes in her own right.
The campus of the Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers in Waterville is named for Dorothy Alfond. She once served on its board of directors.
Born in Waterville, Dorothy Alfond was the daughter of William Levine, who founded Levine’s clothing store, a fixture in Waterville for more than a century until it closed in 1996.
She and Harold Alfond had four children and 13 grandchildren.
A public memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday at Lorimer Chapel at Colby College.
