AUGUSTA (AP) – Maine Gov. John Baldacci will file a disaster declaration Tuesday for Aroostook County after a storm that dumped more than three feet of snow.

Maine residents are perfectly capable of dealing with most snowstorms but the relentless drubbing of Aroostook County last week took a financial toll, he said.

“Mainers are hardy and work well together helping each other in times like these, but this particular storm was extraordinary and has had a major impact on Aroostook County communities,” he said Monday. “Federal assistance will greatly aid these municipalities. We believe our application will be well within eligibility requirements.”

Fort Kent and St. Francis each received 39 inches of snow over 48 hours. Clayton Lake had 38 inches, Madawaska 37 inches and Caribou 31.7. Three days later, the region received a dose of freezing rain but was spared widespread power outages.

If the assistance is granted, the Federal Emergency Management Agency would reimburse 75 percent of communities’ eligible snow removal costs.
