RUMFORD – An employee of Black Mountain ski area is doing fine after a marine-type battery exploded Monday morning and fluid and debris struck him on the face and neck, officials said Monday.

The unidentified man had been working in one of the buildings on the mountain when the accident occurred, Black Mountain Marketing Director Craig Zurhorst said Monday. He declined to release the man’s name.

Black Mountain employees escorted the man down to the ski lodge so he could take a shower, Zurhorst said.

Med-Care Ambulance responded, Director Dean Milligan said, and medical personnel cleaned the man up and assessed his injuries.

He did receive some abrasions and lacerations to the face and neck, Milligan said Monday.

The man was transported by ambulance to Rumford Hospital, Milligan said, with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The man is doing fine, Zurhorst said.

The incident is being investigated to determine why the battery exploded.

Milligan commended the ski area’s workers for taking the proper action after the accident happened.
