LEWISTON – Katie Lauze, a 2005 high honors graduate of Lewiston High School, has been named a Mitchell Scholar and will receive a $1,000 award for each of her four years of college.

She was personally recognized by former Sen. George Mitchell at the Mitchell Scholars Brunch held in the fall at the University of Maine.

The core mission of the Mitchell Institute is to increase the likelihood that young people from every community in Maine will aspire to, pursue and achieve a college education.

Each year 130 Mitchell scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors from every public high school in Maine who will attend a two- or four-year postsecondary degree program.

The institute received more than 1,000 applicants in 2005. The recipients were chosen for their scholastic achievement and spirit of community involvement.

Lauze is a freshman at the University of Maine in Orono, majoring in public management. She is enrolled in the Honors College, a student senator, vice chairwoman of her Hall Governing Board, a member of the University Singers and the a capella women’s group, Renaissance.

She also continues her involvement with the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council as college representative. She was a founding member and past chairwoman. She is the daughter of Peter and Elissa Lauze of Lewiston.
