TOGUS – Martin Gregory “Greg” Curtis, 62, of Phillips, died early Monday morning, Jan. 2, at the Veterans Hospital where he lost his battle with cancer.

He was born April 24, 1943, in Jackson, Ariz., a son of Linwood and Anna (Lemay) Smith Curtis. He was educated in Strong and Kingfield schools.

A veteran of the U.S. Marines, he served from 1961-65. On April 25, 1964, he married Sandra Wall and they made their home in Phillips.

Greg was a truck driver most of his life. He was employed by Forster Mfg. Co., Pioneer Plastics in Auburn, Michael Wahl Logging, Bruce Dunham Logging and Cousineau Lumber, from where he retired in April of 2005 taking his namesake from the truck, “The Fugitive.”

He was a member of the American Legion and the American Hunter’s Club. He also served as the third selectman of Avon for two consecutive terms. His hobbies included, hunting, ice fishing, snowmobiling and ATVs. He especially enjoyed Caribou hunting trips to Quebec and traveling to Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, Colorado and Hawaii.

He loved to tell stories and if you didn’t know him, you probably would believe them.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra, of Phillips; his mother, Anna Smith, of Farmington; two daughters, Tami Bredeau and Kelly Nadeau, of Phillips; a brother, Michael Shirley, of Kingfield; three sisters, Bobbi Tilton, Leona Ross and Judy Schmitt; four grandchildren, who he enjoyed very much, Colby and Casey Bredeau and Kirk and Kayla Haines; uncles, cousins and nieces.

He was predeceased by a sister, JoAnn; and father, Linwood.
