LEWISTON – Lewiston eighth-grade teacher Sue Reny has won the VFW Post 9150 Teacher of the Year Award and the Department of Maine VFW Middle School Teacher of the Year competition.

The local award goes to a teacher who shows support of Americanism programs in the classroom. Reny has been a supporter of many veterans programs in her classroom and the VFW Patriot Pen scholarship program during the past four years.

She was nominated by her peers, and Post Teacher of the Year Chairman Robert Macdonald submitted her name to the post committee. They sent the nomination to the District 9 Judging Committee, and District 9 Commander William B. Bradbury forwarded her selection on to the Department of Maine VFW.

District 9 Chairman Art Bentz was notified by State Teacher of the Year Committee Chairman R. Randy Worthly that Reny has won the Department of Maine VFW Middle School Teacher of the Year competition. Worthly said he forwarded her name for national consideration.

Reny was given the post award during the Patriot Pen, Voice of Democracy and Teacher of the Year Awards banquet at the post November meeting. Arrangements will be made to present her and the school with the state awards.
