As controversy – and some guilty consciences – swirl about in the halls of Congress, Mainers might want to know that their two senators have clean hands.

Neither Olympia Snowe nor Susan Collins ever accepted any campaign contributions from fallen lobbyist Jack Abramoff or his clients.

Abramoff and his clients specifically wooed GOP members seeking favor for various legislative positions.

Snowe and Collins are Republicans.

Representatives for each, Preston Hartman on behalf of Snowe and Jen Burita for Collins, said unequivocally Wednesday afternoon that the senators were far removed from Abramoff’s once substantial influence.

As part of a plea bargain, Abramoff agreed to cooperate with investigators probing influence-peddling allegations believed to touch on as many as 20 members of Congress and their aides.

The muckraking Web site WayneMadsenReport.com reports that disgraced Texas Congressman Tom Delay’s ARMPAC made a campaign contribution to the Maine Republican Party. Some ARMPAC funding has been linked to Abramoff clients, the Web site states.
