I totally agree with Fred Holler’s comments to the editor in the Dec. 29 issue regarding the destruction of the trees and greenery that surrounded the Auburn Mall. Isn’t it ironic that local groups have adopted and maintain several “green spots” near the Auburn Mall trying to beautify this area while its owner is doing the opposite?

I would like to know why, for example, a row of crab apple and fir trees that once lined the road running along Mt. Auburn Avenue from Center Street to the Turner Street intersection needed to be cut down. These trees were growing on the side of an embankment beyond the mall’s fence and closest to the roadway. Their aesthetic value, it seems to me, was more precious than bare spots subject to water runoff and erosion, not to mention the shelter they provided for birds and small animals.

Holler asks why the Auburn Mall area is being “ravaged for no practical reason.” I, too, would like to hear the owner’s side of the story.
