FARMINGTON – A 16-year-old Rumford mother and her son were injured Friday after she lost control of her vehicle in slush while passing a logging truck on Route 2 and struck a tree, police said.

The truck driver had slowed to let in the passing sports utility vehicle driven by Valerie King because there was an oncoming tractor-trailer in the opposite lane, Farmington police officer Mary Pratt said Friday.

When King sped up and pulled in front of the logging truck, she lost control and ended up hitting the tree with the back of her vehicle, Pratt said.

King had a head injury and possible broken bones in her leg and hip, Pratt said.

Neither King nor her 2-year-old son, Shawn, had life-threatening injuries, Farmington Police Lt. Jack Peck said Friday afternoon.

The child was belted in the right rear seat of the SUV but not in a safety seat as required by law, Peck said. He had abrasions from the seat belt, he said.

Police are investigating the accident, Peck said, and will decide whether charges will be filed.

Farmington firefighters extricated King from the vehicle, he said.

Traffic was backed up on both sides of the road between Farmington Falls and New Sharon to let a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter land on the road after the 8:10 a.m. accident.

NorthStar Emergency Medical Services medics took care of the mother and son until the helicopter could fly them to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

King was listed in fair condition Friday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Pratt said the last time she talked to the hospital Friday both the mother and child were in stable condition.

Franklin County sheriff deputies assisted Farmington police at the scene and Deputy Aaron Turcotte reconstructed the accident, Peck said.
