BRUNSWICK – Rashaun Ewing scored the game-winning goal with 1:04 remaining in overtime to lead the New England College to a 5-4 win over Bowdoin in men’s hockey action Saturday.

The Polar Bears (9-3-0) led 2-0 in the early going on goals from Tim McVaugh and Greg McConnell.

After trading goals to make it a 3-1 contest, the Pilgrims (8-2-0) ripped off three straight tallies to take a 4-3 lead going into the final frame.

Bowdoin tied the contest in the third period on a score from Bryan Ciborowski, but could not net the game-winner despite outshooting the Pilgrims 36-25 for the game.

Colby 4, St. Anselm 3

WATERVILLE – Ben Grandjean stopped 32 shots, including 14 in the final period, to lift the Colby College men’s hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Saint Anselm on Saturday at Alfond Rink.

Colby (10-2) opened up a 4-0 lead early in the second period, but Saint Anselm (8-2-1) made a goalie change and got back in the game. The Mules led 2-0 after the first period on goals by T.J. Kelley and Patrick Rutherford who scored with two seconds left in the period. Joel Covelli made it 3-0 just 50 seconds into the second period, then Adam Marino scored at 4:47 for Colby.

Trinity 6, USM 2

GORHAM – Trinity College scored four unanswered goals in the third period to snap a 2-2 tie and go on to defeat the University of Southern Maine 6-2 in an ECAC Division III men’s ice hockey game Saturday.

Senior Bryan Crabtree broke the 2-2 tie at 9:37 of the third period with his fourth goal of the season off an assist from Richard Masucci. Eleven seconds later, junior David Breen deposited the first of his two third period goals to make it 4-2.

The Bantams (7-4-0) kept the pressure on as freshman Tom Price netted his second goal of the game to make it 5-2.

The Huskies (1-8-2) took the early lead as sophomore Dane Marshall scored off assists from Mike Stevens and junior Marc Santuccio at 13:55 of the opening period. Stevens had knotted the game at 2-2 for Southern Maine with a short-handed tally at 15:16 of the second period.

Women’s hockey

Williams 4, Bowdoin 3

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Anna Condino flipped a shot from 18-feet out over the shoulder of goalie Cat MacEachern to notch the game-winner as Williams took a 4-3 decision from Bowdoin in women’s hockey action Saturday.

The contest opened with plenty of firepower as the teams netted five goals in the first period. Catherine Mullen put the Eps (4-4) on the board first at the 5:27 mark.

The Polar Bears (4-5) countered with goals from Jayme Woogerd and Meghan Gillis, before Katie Forney stretched the nylon with another go-ahead goal in the closing minutes of the opening frame.

Despite a scoreless second period that was filled with plenty of shots by both teams, the Ephs knotted the score at three when Alessandra LaFirandra went high on MacEachern, who was trying to regain her footing during a wild scramble in front of the cage.

Middlebury 7, Colby 1

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury scored four third-period goals as the Panthers cruised to a 7-1 win over Colby in women’s hockey action Saturday.

The Mules (5-4) took a 1-0 lead 9:37 into the first period when Heather Nickerson scored from the left face-off circle off an assist from Colette Finley. Abby Kurtz-Phelan, who had two goals in the game, responded seven minutes later for the Panthers (10-0) with a one-timer after a nice crossing pass from Karen Levin.

Women’s basketball

Brown 55, Maine 46

PROVIDENCE, RI – Sarah Hayes poured in a game-high 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Brown to a 55-46 victory over the University of Maine in a women’s basketball game Saturday.

Colleen Kelly shot four-of-eight from the three-point line and finished with 19, while Ashley King-Bischof added 10 for Brown (5-6).

Abby Schrader led Maine with nine and Bracey Barker scored eight points and had eight boards for the Black Bears (4-8).

USM 80, Western Connecticut 39

GORHAM – Junior guard Katie Sibley led three players in double-figures with 16 points as the University of Southern Maine brushed aside the Western Connecticut State Colonials, 80-39, in an LEC women’s basketball game Saturday.

The Huskies (12-1) scored the first point of the night on a free throw from senior forward Megan Myles of Auburn and led the rest of the way. Sibley was 4-for-5 from three-point range.

Junior forward Ashley Marble scored 13 points and hauled down a game-high seven rebounds in limited action, while senior guard Katie Frost recorded three 3-pointers to chip in with 11 points, two assists and two steals.

Sophomore guard Nia Harmon came off the bench to pace the Colonials (4-7) with 12 points and six rebounds.

Bowdoin 74, Emmanuel 53

BRUNSWICK – Eileen Flaherty scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 10 boards to power Bowdoin to a 74-53 victory over Emmanuel in women’s basketball Saturday. Marisa Berne and Jill Anelauskas combined for 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Polar Bears (11-1), who outscored Emmanuel by 14 in the second half to pull away.

LaTeisha Johnson drained 16 points and Jade Paez added 14 for Emmanuel (6-4).

Colby 53, UMPI 43

PRESQUE ISLE – Katie McCabe poured in 18 points to lead Colby to a 53-43 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in women’s basketball action Saturday.

The Mules (5-6) led 28-24 at the half. Kate Emery contributed 12 points, while Laura Williamson had 10 points and Courtney Williams added six.

The Owls were held to just 19 points in the second half by Colby.

Men’s basketball

USM 75, Western Connecticut 70

GORHAM – Josh Daniels drained a game-high 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 75-70 win against Western Connecticut in a men’s basketball game on Saturday.

Bill Hardwick chipped in with 13 points and six boards, while Andy Frost scored 11 and had five steals for USM (8-5).

For Western Connecticut, it was Greg Cole with a team-high 20 points and three 3-pointers. Jason Barnett pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and added 12 for Western Connecticut (7-5).

Bowdoin 84, UMF 71

BRUNSWICK – Andrew Hippert dropped a game-high 22 points to carry Bowdoin to a 84-71 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington on Saturday.

Bowdoin’s (7-4) Andrew Sargeantson and Kevin Bradley scored 16 points apiece, Bradley also had 10 assists. The Polar Bears went on a 12-2 run at the start of the second half to pull away.

Sean Fry made six out of eight 3-pointers for a team-high 18 points, while Matt St. John chipped in with 14 for the Beavers (5-2).

Bates 73, Colby 69

LEWISTON – Junior guard Zak Ray scored nine points in the final 63 seconds of regulation to force overtime as Bates went on to pick up a 73-69 win over Colby in men’s basketball action Saturday.

Junior forward Rob Stockwell scored 16 points with eight rebounds for the Bobcats (9-2), who won their sixth consecutive game. Sophomore guard Bryan Wholey had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Ray recorded one as well with 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Colby junior center Drew Cohen led the White Mules (5-7) with a game-high 17 points and nine blocked shots to go with 10 rebounds.

Late game execution by Bates senior center Matt Chudomel with an inside hoop, and Wholey with a turnaround jumper put the Bobcats ahead 71-69 with 59 seconds remaining in overtime. A pair of free throws by Ray iced the game for Bates.
