Dr. Coulter has owned the 149-acre Timberdoodle Tree Farm for 42 years. It became certified as a tree farm in 1983. He was the associate dean in charge of wildlife programs at the University of Maine School of Forestry for 34 years.
A Tree Farm Field Day is planned for Aug. 26 when the public will be invited to visit the farm for activities such as a demonstration of apple tree grafting, viewing a portable saw mill and learning how to build a duck nesting box.
Runners-up for the 2006 Maine Tree Farmer of the Year Award are Oxford County, Ernest and Alberta Angevine of Bethel and Kennebec County, Ernest Chesley, director, Pine Tree Camp of Rome. All three won county awards.
The competition recognizes private landowners for the exceptional job they do to enhance forestland on their property. Winners are also chosen based on their efforts to foster and promote the practice of sustainable forestry to other landowners and the public.
