SHARON, Vt. (AP) – A motorist who stopped to pick up an apparently broken down driver was clubbed in the head, stabbed and robbed by the assailant who was then picked up by someone driving the car that was thought to have been disabled.

Police described the assailant as a man of medium build and height with a “scraggly beard,” who was last seen wearing a fleece jacket and jeans.

The driver, who has asked not to be identified, mistook the hitchhiker for a stranded motorist and offered to give him a ride to a gas station.

Once in the car, the assailant pulled a knife on the victim and demanded his wallet and cash. He took credit cards and cash, then hit the driver in the head and stabbed him in the leg.

According to the victim, his assailant had been with a dark-colored Audi with Vermont license plates. The car picked him up after the assault took place.

The victim was treated for his injuries and then released.
