HIRAM – Two Hiram teenagers died after their snowmobiles crashed head-on at high speeds Monday night, according to the Maine Warden Service.
Mike Cramm, 14, of Hiram was a passenger on one of the snowmobiles and died at the accident scene on Barker Pond shortly after 7 p.m. Seth Day, 19, of Hiram was driving the other snowmobile and died Tuesday at Maine Medical Center from his injuries, according to Mark Latti of the Warden Service.
Day’s snowmobile collided with a snowmobile driven by a third boy who is being treated at Maine Medical Center for facial and head trauma, internal injuries and a broken leg, Latti said. Latti would not identify the boy, but news reports say he is Seth’s 17-year-old brother, Shane.
There were five boys riding four snowmobiles. Two other boys with the group witnessed part of the accident, Latti said, but it is still unclear what happened.
“It is difficult to tell. No one saw the entire thing,” Latti said. “What we have to rely on is the accident. There were pieces of sleds all over the place. What exactly they were doing is hard to figure out at this point.”
The two snowmobiles were traveling fast when they crashed, Latti said, but their speed is unknown. All three boys were wearing helmets.
