In October, the seventh grade class on the Bengals team at Tripp Middle School learned about cells. The teacher, Mrs. Dawn Youland, had them make a cake that looked like a cell.

Mrs. Youland got this idea from one of her sons who had to do it in school and she said that it would be good to have a hands-on experiment to do instead of working in the text books.

She had six or seven students bring in cakes for the cells but the students that brought them in didn’t have to put frosting or anything on them because that’s what the students were going to do as a group. It was part of the science learning class.

The seventh grade class had frosting and little candies that they used to label the cake. Some of the examples of candies were DOT’S, M&M’S, and other yummy stuff. They had to work as groups of three and decorate the cake. Finally, after they were done with that they had a test with it. The groups had to tell what part was which without looking at a paper and everything.

After the group was finished labeling and having the test, they got to eat the cake and have soda, too. They fooled around and had a blast with it.

This project that the seventh graders did was to learn about cells. While they learned about cells, they got to have some fun. Cole Rowland, one of the seventh graders said, “It was more fun than working in the text book.”

I went to other seventh graders and asked them what they thought. “I thought it was different than anything else we did this year,” Nicole Roy had expressed. Most of the other students mentioned that it was fun and they were happy they didn’t have to do actual school work but they did it as part of their grade. It was a test but it felt like nothing. It was a fun way to get a good grade, and a different way to learn. You worked as a team to memorize parts of the cell and tell them to the teacher. I think that everyone got an awesome grade while doing that project and I believe that they learned from it too.

The students had some pictures taken of making the cake and eating it, too. They look like they are having so much fun with it. They all were shoveling cake in their mouths after. Making that cake made the students so hungry that they couldn’t wait to get to eat it.

After everyone was done and people were eating, we gave some cake to different teachers. They thought that it was wonderful; they liked the idea of doing that project.

At the end of the project the class was about over. The students started picking up and switched class, but they thought the project was really cool.
