CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – Fish and Game officials are warning that this week’s warm spell and rain have made ice conditions throughout the state unpredictable at best.

Major Tim Acerno urges ice fishermen and snowmobilers to check the thickness of all ice before venturing onto lakes or ponds, and to check repeatedly while on the ice.

“Riders should remember to check local conditions before heading out on snowmobile trails or on the ice,” he said. “Don’t assume a trail is safe just because it’s there.”

Acerno said 6 inches usually is considered safe enough to support someone walking, with 8 to 10 inches for snow machines or ATVs. But Acerno said all bets are off this year. Even thick ice may not be strong because varying weather conditions can break down ice.
