LEWISTON – The annual meeting of the Alumni Association of the Central Maine General Hospital-Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing will be held on Thursday, Jan. 19, at the School of Nursing, 70 Middle St There will be a guest speaker from noon to 1 p.m. followed by a business meeting and election of officers.

The speaker will be Dennis Sweetser on “Women in the Civil War.” He will include a discussion of the role of nurses in the war … a topic of interest to members of the association.

Sweetser is a retired chemistry teacher from Edward Little High School in Auburn. He had three ancestors who fought in the Civil War, and two of them died in the war. One of them, a member of the 20th Maine, is still buried in an unmarked grave at Gettysburg.

Sweetser’s great-grandfather survived and came home from the war. When Sweetser was 14, his parents took him to visit Gettysburg. That was the beginning of his lifelong interest in the Civil War. He has a personal library of about 160 books on the topic.

All area nurses are invited. Those attending should bring their own “brown bag” lunch. Call 783-4322 for information.
