WOODSTOCK – With water freezing on their helmets in the bitter cold, firefighters put out a fire Monday afternoon that destroyed a 17-year-old recreational vehicle and all the possessions of the man living there.

“It was a bit stubborn,” Woodstock Fire Chief Geff Inman said about the fire, which started at about 2 p.m. and took the Woodstock and Greenwood firefighting teams about 20 minutes to extinguish.

The vehicle belonged to Joanne Walters, who parked it behind her home on Route 26 in Bryant Pond village. She said she let her brother’s chauffeur, Don Parker, live in there as part of his payment for driving her brother.

Parker declined to talk about the fire, but Inman said he lost everything. The vehicle had water gushing from the steps as firefighters sprayed it. After the fire was put out, the interior looked black and charred.

The Woodstock Fire Department will give Parker money to cover his immediate needs and he will stay with Walters, Inman said.

Parker was in the trailer when the fire began, but he wasn’t injured. He told firefighters that the flames began underneath the RV heater. Inman said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Walters said her RV is insured.

Inman said Paris and Bethel firefighters were called and turned back. Tri-Town Rescue from West Paris also responded to the fire.
