BUCKFIELD – No one was injured when a fire broke out Monday in an apartment building at 19 Morrill St.
Only one of the building’s six apartments was damaged, Fire Chief Steven Bly said. The tenant in that apartment was not home at the time.
Bly said Rescue Chief Lisa Buck was responding to a call next to the building at about 2:15 p.m. A tenant ran over to Buck to say they couldn’t get through to 911 to report the fire. Buck contacted the Buckfield Fire Department, and fire crews from Turner and Sumner were called in to help.
The fire originated in apartment No. 1 on the first floor, Bly said. The heat of the fire broke a tall window in the back corner of the apartment, where it started, but there was little other damage. Buckfield firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about 15 minutes, and the calls to Turner and Sumner were canceled.
Bly has not determined the cause of the fire, but said it is not considered suspicious. He estimates about $5,000 worth of damage. According to Bly, there were no smoke detectors in the apartment where the fire started.
