WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) – Brandeis University has received another $25 million donation from Carl and Ruth Shapiro, this time for construction of a new science center, the school announced on Wednesday.
Six years ago the couple gave $25 million – setting a single-donation record – for a new campus center at the Waltham school. They have now donated more than $60 million dating to 1950, two years after the school was created.
Brandeis President Jehuda Reinharz said in a news release that the $154 million Carl J. Shapiro Science Center will be home to research in areas including genetics, and Alzheimer’s disease.
Carl Shapiro said Brandeis is “doing important work in the life sciences and other areas that will help us understand the causes and find cures for debilitating diseases.”
Construction of the science center begins this spring. The campus center is named for Ruth Shapiro. The couple live in Boston and Palm Beach, Fla.
