RANGELEY – Everything is definitely still a go for the annual Snodeo that runs from tonight through Saturday, Evelyn McAllister, executive director of the Rangeley Lakes Chamber of Commerce, said Wednesday.
There is enough snow and ice for the radar runs, she said.
The Snodeo, when thousands of people converge on the town for the weekend festival, has been held for more than 20 years, with or without snow, she said.
“We’re hoping to get snow at the tail end of the storm,” she said as it rained throughout Franklin County on Wednesday. “It’s forecast at the end.”
The Rangeley Lakes Snowmobile Club has been preparing for the event for two to three months, President Clark Allen said Wednesday.
It takes a while to get sponsors and permits to hold the radar run, he said.
“We’re just waiting on the weather. Hopefully, it dries out,” he said.
The weather may deter some people from coming, he said.
“But we’ve had years before like this, and everything went fine,” he said.
The festival will kick off with a chili-chowder cook-off at 6 p.m. today, at the Rangeley Inn followed by Casino Night with the Maine State Lottery at 7 p.m.
The Snodeo is expected to conclude with a snowmobile parade and fireworks Saturday evening.
“It is a challenge working with Mother Nature sometimes, but we will prevail,” McAllister said.
