The image of the Madonna that some people see on the blackened wall at the scene of a house fire in Mexico, Maine, is the latest in a series of such sightings around the world.

Some of the events have become important to the faithful, like the 1917 sighting at Fatima, Portugal, and the hundreds of sightings of the Virgin of Guadeloupe in Mexico (the country), starting in 1531.

Over the centuries, those sightings and some others have drawn millions of people to the places where people reported seeing the Virgin Mary appear.

Some recent appearances have not only drawn the media’s attention, they have resulted in hefty profits. A grilled cheese sandwich with the Virgin Mary’s image on it sold for $28,000 on eBay, and two Funyon onion-ring snacks that resembled a sculpture of the Madonna and child were auctioned for $609 on eBay.

The owner of the Mexico, Maine, house where the Madonna appeared after Sunday’s fire says she will not sell that image.
