Chalk up another bit of excitement in Colby Gilbert’s post-Lewiston Maineiacs hockey career.
Gilbert, an Auburn resident who played last season with the Maineiacs, played in the annual Maritime Junior A Hockey League All-Star Game Tuesday.
“It was one of the few goals I had this year,” said Gilbert. It was exciting to play with everyone from across the league. It was a good experience for me.”
Gilbert had a goal and assist in the all-star game and tied for first place in the accurate shot competition, hitting all four targets. His time of 28 seconds was third best, though, 10 seconds slower than the eventual winner.
Gilbert has been one of the top point-scoring forwards in the MJAHL this season, with 57 points in 40 games, good for 11th overall.
“I’ve still got a couple more personal goals I want to reach,” said Gilbert, “but I’ve only got 11 games left to do it. The biggest thing, though, is that the team, we want to make a good run through the playoffs this year.”
After starting the season with more losses than wins, the Antigonish Bulldogs, Gilbert’s team, ran off a string of wins and currently sits third in the Bent Division at 21-20-2-0.
“I hope we can go far in the playoffs,” said Gilbert. “I want to play this last season of juniors as long as I can.”
Gilbert continues to mull his options for next season, too.
“I haven’t been in contact with anyone from a university, yet,” said Gilbert, “but I still want to go play in Europe, and my assistant coach is helping me with that. I’ll choose whichever option is best for me at the time.”
Gilbert resumes playing with the Bulldogs after Thursday’s game against the Moncton Gagnon Beavers, when he will finish a suspension for a gross misconduct penalty he received last week.
