The Great Department Store is ready for the carnival and has one of the most attractively dressed windows in the city. And nothing could be more appropriate for a winter carnival. In one of the large windows a horse and sleigh. A young lady attired in green and handsomely furred, holds the webbins. Another young lady stands at the head of the team petting the horse, while a third is seated in the sleigh. The effect when the window is brightly illuminated is most artistic and attracts much attention.

50 Years Ago, 1956

Development of a new dental X-ray machine takes a “panoramic x-ray picture of the whole mouth in about 40 seconds” was announced by the government. The announcement said the device makes it possible to reduce to less than five minutes the over-all time required for a dentist to make a “full mouth survey – compared with 20 minutes required under present techniques that involve taking 14 separate “pictures of different areas of the mouth.” The announcement said the new machine should be particularly useful to the armed forces in making rapid dental surveys of personnel who enter and leave the service – and to communities making mass surveys of school children’s teeth.

25 Years Ago, 1981

A staffing shortage in the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department predicted weeks ago is finally taking its toll on the department, and Sheriff Joseph Laliberte describes the situation as “severe.” Laliberte has asked for an emergency inspection of the County jail by the Department of Mental Health and Corrections which could conceivably result in the facility losing its certification. Representatives of the department will inspect the jail and give the sheriff an appraisal, Laliberte said. “I feel the deputies have a right to be protected,” he said. “At this point the staff is in such poor condition that their safety is of concern.”
