LEWISTON – Before Farwell School is closed for good and demolished, it will be open for one night to offer alumni a chance to tour it, Principal Linda Golding said Tuesday.

The alumni tour will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3.

“We’ve had people ask if we were going to have the school open before it was torn down so they can come in,” Golding said. Farwell School has been open for 52 years and has served thousands of children. Some of the teachers went to school where they now teach, Golding said.

The building will be torn down in March to make way for a new $10.7 million school. Beginning after February vacation, students will attend Holy Cross School on Sabattus Street during the 18-month construction.

Before the move, students will be taken to their temporary school to see where they’ll attend class, eat lunch and find the school nurse.

School Superintendent Leon Levesque said Tuesday that the move, demolition and construction are on schedule. He’s hoping the building will be torn down and the grounds ready for construction as soon as March.

A new school is needed because the existing building is overcrowded and old. Farwell is one of six K-6 schools in Lewiston.
