MEXICO – Wardo’s, a variety store in the Mexico Plaza, plans to close by the end of March.
Manager Bobbi Frost said this week that two of the store’s four employees have already been laid off. She and one other person will staff the store during the shortened hours in effect until the closure: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays.
The business moved from the former Abbott Farm Plaza in Rumford in October 2004. It had previously been known as The Dollar Store. When it moved to the Mexico Plaza, inventory was expanded to include items costing more than a dollar. The store had previously been the site of a video rental business.
Owner Jay Ward of New Hampshire owns several other stores in New England, including one in Standish, Frost said.
Another business, The Family Dollar Store on Congress Street in Rumford is negotiating to move its store to Mexico.
Chuck Truesdell, Maine district manager for Family Dollar, would not confirm rumors on Tuesday that the local store would move to the Mexico Plaza, but said it’s possible that it could move into the site of the former Food City grocery store.
“We’re still negotiating,” he said.
He declined to provide further information.
Family Dollar has been located in Rumford for several years. The business has been looking for a larger site.
