In a hearing day full of consumer issues, Rep. Judd Thompson, D-China, proposed putting the name of originally prescribed drugs on medicine bottles even if the bottle is filled with a generic drug.

He proposed it after a constituent’s mother had her prescription for the blood pressure pill Lasix filled with the generic forusemide. As one bottle among many she had to take, her family didn’t recognize the drug’s generic name.

Thompson said he spoke with several pharmacists who said the change might save some time on the phone answering questions. Maine Medical Association came out in favor of it, Hannaford Bros. and Rite-Aid had concerns. Among them: where to put more wording on such little bottles and whether more information would lead to more confusion.

Thompson’s bill, L.D. 1827, will also be worked on by the Business, Research and Economic Development Committee next Tuesday.
