Gov. John Baldacci needs to wake up and see the mess that he has created with the help of the Democrat-controlled Legislature. Obviously, the governor doesn’t remember his “no new taxes” promise, which was a cornerstone of his 2002 campaign. According to the Office of Public and Legislative Affairs, Baldacci has raised taxes and fees by nearly $700 million since taking office. That includes additional licensing for small businesses, targeted sales tax increases and recreational fees. These massive increases are simply more reasons why citizens need to pull the plug on this administration’s failed policies.

It’s time for some new leadership, especially since the governor’s claims can’t pass the straight-face test with the hardworking people of Maine. The Republicans in the Legislature have continuously offered common-sense solutions to Maine’s crushing tax burden, and have been obstructed by the Democratic majority.

It’s time for a change in Augusta.
