DOVER, N.H. (AP) – A former University of New Hampshire student faces 22 years in prison after being convicted of running over and killing another student.

It took a jury just over three hours Friday to convict Kevin Whittaker, 20, of negligent homicide in the death of Richard Hegerich, 20.

During his week-long trial, prosecutors said Whittaker was drunk when he struck Hegerich and then kept driving on Nov. 21, 2004.

He was stopped by police about a mile away for a defective headlight.

Whittaker’s lawyer acknowledged that his client was impaired, but emphasized that Hegerich also had been drinking and was wearing dark clothes on a rainy, foggy night.
