I am writing as an Auburn city councilor to clarify my continued opposition to the proposed Great Falls parking garage. In an editorial Jan. 2, it was stated that the garage would be good for economic development. That is right, the garage will be good for the economic development – of the privately held TIM Corp.

In most areas of the country, other than in Lewiston-Auburn, parking garages are built and maintained by the private sector. Auburn’s own zoning ordinance states that parking is the responsibility of the developer. It is clear that the citizens of Auburn feel likewise.

City councilors should represent the people who elected them, not the chosen few with special interests. It should also be noted that some have stated that the vote to de-authorize the parking garage bond should have passed, as one councilor who voted not to de-authorize should have recused himself because of ties to the developer.

I also find it ironic that two principals of the TIM Corp. are part of an effort to assist the needy with their fuel bills. I’m sure the millions in corporate welfare they expect to receive from Auburn at the expense of taxpayers makes that an easier task.
