NORWAY – Grace Brooks Evans, 82, of Buck Hill Apartments, died at Stephens Memorial Hospital Thursday, Jan. 26.

She was born in Bryant Pond on April 26, 1923, the daughter of Gleynn and Georgianna (Noyes) Brooks. She attended schools in Woodstock and graduated from Brighton High School in Island Pond, Vt., in 1942, the same year she married Otis Evans of Bryant Pond.

While Mr. Evans was in the military, Grace worked in Portland at the Cushman Bakery. They lived in Bethel for a while, then South Portland, and later moved to Oxford. Grace was a homemaker most of her life. When the children were of school age, Grace worked as a crossing guard for several years in South Portland.

She was a member of the Pythian Sisters, Daughters of Union Veterans, American Legion Auxiliary No. 112, the Island Pond Vermont Historical Society and the Oxford Fire Department Auxiliary.

Grace enjoyed writing poetry and letters to old school mates.

For several years, Otis and Grace, along with Grace’s brother and sisters, took yearly trips to Island Pond, Vt., to attend class reunions.

She is survived by a daughter, Alleen Eastwood of Biddeford; a son, Otis Evans and his wife, Jennifer, of Greenwood, S.C.; five grandchildren, Manuela Evans and Arthur Evans and his wife, Marcy, all of South Carolina, Kirsten Eastwood of Saco, Michelle Hirst and her husband, Shayne, of Kennebunkport, and Amanda Eastwood of Biddeford; four great-grandchildren, Isabella Grace Hirst, Brady Hirst, Peter Evans and Hayden Evans; one daughter-in-law, Monika Evans; three sisters, Lillian Leach of Scarborough, Lylia Ferrara of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Gleynce Hughes of Gorham; and one brother, Gleynn Brooks Jr. of Portland.

She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Otis Evans, on Nov. 11; and two brothers, Elwyn and Albert Brooks.
