CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – You may recycle cans and bottles, but Charleston County has a request for its residents: Please don’t recycle your old guns and ammunition.

The county is making the plea after dangerous items, including a loaded gun, were found earlier this month at the county recycling plant.

On Jan. 17, a worker found a torn paper bag with bullets inside. Then a second bag with another box of bullets came down the line. Next, workers found a box with bullets and three guns – one of which was loaded.

Police were called to pick up the guns and ammunition.

“The worst thing someone can do is put these items in their recycling bins or drop-site containers, because those items will be hand-sorted by people, unlike their garbage,” said department spokeswoman Christine DeStefano.

Autopsy on party rules it tasteless

OSLO, Norway (AP) – Health officials in southern Norway said they were disgusted at reports that employees at a hospital threw a party in a post-mortem room and covered an autopsy table with a white cloth, candles and beer bottles.

Management at the Fredrikstad hospital said it learned two weeks ago that employees had staged a Christmas celebration in the room where post-mortem examinations were performed.

“This is unacceptable and unheard of,” Health Minister Sylvia Brustad told state broadcaster NRK. “It makes me sick.”

The employees involved had been called in to explain themselves to their supervisors, the statement said. It was not immediately clear if they would be disciplined.

The room is adjacent to the hospital’s mortuary and chapel, NRK said.

Goat’s behavior proves shocking

ROUND O, S.C. (AP) – A normally pleasant billy goat turned gruff and, for his troubles, was zapped three times with a Taser gun.

Dodge the billy goat snapped a leash and charged at neighbor Dawn Pinette, knocking her to the ground Wednesday in this community about 35 miles west of Charleston.

“All I could do was grab his horns and scream bloody murder,” Pinette, 38, said.

Her daughter called police and Colleton County Deputy Jeff Scott arrived to try to help Pinette up. But the goat bullied his way in and the deputy used his Taser.

At first, Pinette thought the goat was dead.

“Within a few seconds he was back up and going after him again,” she said.

Deputies were finally able to get the goat in the back of a pickup truck, but not before stunning it twice more.

The goat’s owner plans to find him a new home, authorities said.

Steve Tuttle, a spokesman for Taser International, said he has heard of a Taser being used on two moose in the Yukon as well as on a bear.

“An ostrich would be the oddest one,” Tuttle said.

Team spirit strong in Steeler, Pa.

WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) – Just to make sure there’s no confusion about which football team they support in the Super Bowl, the mayor and council changed the city’s name. Welcome to Steeler, Pa.

The name change will last through Feb. 5, when the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks play for the football championship.

“I know the folks in the state of Washington are rooting for the Seahawks, so we wanted to make sure everyone knows the city of Washington is fully in support of the Steelers,” said Mayor Kenneth J. Westcott.

The city of about 15,000 people is south of Pittsburgh.
