LISBON – Selectmen have called a special town meeting Tuesday night to act on three articles dealing with the town’s transition from a Board of Selectmen form of government to a town council.

The first article will extend the current selectmen’s terms from the end of the May annual town meeting through to June 30. This will allow selectmen to continue in office until the end of the current fiscal year.

A seven-member town council will be elected in May, and council members begin their duties July 1.

The second article will ask voter approval to extend the term of the Advisory Board members until June 30 for the same reason.

The final article addresses the School Committee. The committee members whose terms would have expired with town meeting would be extended until the first Monday in December because those positions will be filled in the November election. Committee members whose terms would have expired with the annual town meeting in 2007 would be extended to the first Monday in December 2007, when members elected in that year’s November election take office. The same will apply to those whose terms would have expired with town meeting in 2008.

After that, all School Committee terms would begin the first Tuesday after the first Monday in December and end the first Monday of December at the end of three years.

The changes in the town code are being recommended by town counsel Roger Therriault in order to ensure a smooth transition.

The annual town meeting and election in May will be the last time Lisbon voters will have an annual town meeting. Municipal elections will take place in November annually instead of May.

Tuesday’s town meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the town office conference room.
