AUGUSTA – The family of Sgt. First Class Shawn C. Dostie, who died in the line of duty in Iraq on Dec. 30, was on hand at the Legislature as Dostie was honored for his sacrifice.

His parents, Robert and Delaine Fugere, his widow, Stephanie, his children, Cameron and Bayleigh, and his aunt and uncle, Pauline and Raymond Goyette, were present at the invitation of Sen. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, as the Legislature remembered Dostie.

The official memoriam praised Dostie’s “exemplary character, helpful nature and outstanding leadership skills” and went on to say that “Shawn’s commitment to and sacrifice for his country have earned him the pride and gratitude of his native community and state.”

Dostie was born in Rumford and was a 1991 graduate of Lewiston High School.

Rotundo sponsored the sentiment, which was cosponsored by Rep. Sonya Sampson, D-Lewiston, Elaine Makas, D-Lewiston, Lillian LaFontaine O’Brien, D-Lewiston, William Walcott, D-Lewiston, and Margaret Craven, D-Lewiston.

“The people of Maine share the pain and loss of the Dostie family,” said Rotundo in her Senate speech. “I move that when the Legislature adjourns today we do so in lasting tribute of Sergeant First Class Shawn Dostie.”

Dostie was buried with full military honors in a Jan. 11 ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
