HINSDALE, N.H. (AP) – Divers on Thursday recovered the body of man who ran from police and jumped into the freezing Connecticut River.

Police Chief Wayne Gallagher said an officer was questioning the man after residents reported someone was going door-to-door ringing doorbells Saturday. The man, whose name wasn’t released, told the officer he was campaigning for president.

While the officer was checking the man’s identification, he ran toward the river, jumped in and went under.

Gallagher said the man’s ID showed he might have lived in Canada, but that he told the officer he lived in Brattleboro, Vt.
