PORTLAND – The Portland Symphony Orchestra will present a program of passion and enlightenment with works by Wojciech Kilar, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius Tuesday, Feb. 14. Featured at the 7:30 p.m. classical concert will be soloist Karen Gomyo on violin.
A concert conversation led by conductor Alexander Mickelthwate will begin at 6:15 p.m. prior to the concert; it is free for all ticket-holders.
Mickelthwate is assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Tuesday’s concert opens with a tone poem by Polish composer Wojciech Kilar entitled “Orawa.”
The program continues with Tchaikovsky’s “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Major, Op. 35.” It will feature Gomyo on the violin.
Gomyo has appeared as soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo and Hiroshima Symphony Orchestras, among others.
The program concludes with Sibelius’ “Symphony No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 82.”
