This is in response to Paul Macri’s guest column Jan. 29 about the Supreme Court and now-Justice Samuel Alito, and why Alito should not have been confirmed.

First, Macri talks about the liberal think tank The People for the American Way’s 156-page report, but nowhere can I find Macri talking about the American Bar Association’s highest rating for Alito.

Second, he states Alito is against abortion. I watched the hearings, and at no time did Alito state he was against abortion. Macri also stated that a substantial majority of the public support Roe v. Wade. The fact is that 52 percent support and 48 percent do not, while 64 percent support banning partial-birth abortion.

The last issue I will cover is warrantless wiretapping. Macri states that the administration is allowing illegal wiretaps on American citizens and the unlawful detention and torture of suspects held by the government at home and overseas, and that Alito would approve of those actions. The administration has stated intelligence officials are listening to phone conversations which start from outside of the country from known terrorists to people inside the country. More than 60 percent of the public support that action.

I am left to wonder where Macri was when Justices Breyer and Ginsburg were nominated to the Supreme Court, which did make it more liberal. Those two have stated time and again that they look at Europe to help them make their decisions.
