WILDWOOD, N.C. (AP) – Former New York Yankees pitcher Jacob F. “Jake” Wade has died.

Wade, who broke into the major leagues with the Detroit Tigers and played for several other teams in the 1930s and ’40s, died at his home at age 93, his family said Thursday.

The left-hander, nicknamed “Whistling Jack,” died late Wednesday. He suffered a stroke about four years ago in the coastal North Carolina home where he returned after retiring from baseball in 1950, a grandson said.

Wade had a 27-40 career record and a 5.00 earned-run average during eight seasons with the Tigers, St. Louis Browns, Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox before winding up with the Washington Senators and the Yankees in 1946. He played with minor league teams in 1940 and 1941 and served in the military in 1945.

He had his best season in Detroit in 1937, when he was 7-10 in 33 games.
