FARMINGTON – Twenty Scrabble lovers shuffled their tiles, racked their brains and rolled through three games of Scrabble at the Literacy Volunteers tournament held on Jan. 21.

A senior at the University of Maine at Farmington took the honors. Defending champion Lucas Hayden scored 727 points in the three-game contest with a score of 317 points in a single game.

Dr. Les Harding of Jay scored 627 and in third place was Keith Hagel of Auburn with 586 points. Ava Reynolds of Farmington was awarded the best senior prize and the most promising rookie award went to Nancy Pratt of Farmington.

The tournament was held as a fundraiser for Literacy Volunteers of Franklin and Somerset Counties. There are more than 100,000 adults in Maine who have difficulty reading and Literacy Volunteers addresses the problem by providing professionally trained volunteer tutors to teach the adults to read and to help them function more fully in society.

Literacy Volunteers holds three Scrabble fundraisers a year. The next will be held Saturday, April 1, at UMF Ricker Hall Addition. For more information on the contests or to be placed on the mailing list, call Literacy Volunteers at 778-3460.

The next tutor training workshop will be held at the American Legion Hall in Madison on three Saturdays in April. Call the LV office to find out how to become a tutor.

Literacy Volunteers will also have a booth at the Children’s Festival on Feb. 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at UMF North Dining Hall where there will be snowflake and origami activities.
