AUBURN – Faced with rain and warm weather, officials Friday called off this weekend’s popular Auburn Winter Festival.

But all three days of the festival have been rescheduled to next weekend at Lost Valley Ski Area, with a forecast of colder weather and maybe a little snow promising better festival conditions.

Doug Beck, superintendent for Auburn’s Parks and Recreation Department, said all the events planned for this weekend will go on next weekend, except for the indoor carnival, the snowshoe races and the movie series.

Those events were taking place at Central Maine Community College, “but there are other things going on at the college next weekend,” said Beck.

Organizers hope to move the snowshoe lessons – usually held at the college – to Lost Valley next weekend, joining all of the other planned events and attractions Friday through Sunday. A festival wine-tasting event went on as scheduled Friday night and will not be repeated next weekend, Beck said.

Forecasters are calling for more wintry weather as a different weather pattern settles over the area. Colder weather expected early next week will allow the ski area to make snow, with a “hint of real snow” possible later in the week, Beck said, adding that organizers hope to add a few new attractions to the festival schedule by next weekend.
